Honoring A Family Legacy In Electrical Service
Mel Carr Electric began in October 1976 in Colonie, New York, when founder Mel Carr set out to do residential electrical work in a better, more customer-focused way. Working partly from home and partly from a small garage, he built a company grounded in care, quality, and respect for homeowners. That simple beginning in a modest space shaped how we continue to approach every job today. We still draw on those early values as we serve homes across the Capital Region.
Today, Mel’s son Rob Carr leads Mel Carr Electric with a clear commitment to carry that original vision forward. Rob shares how much it matters to him that we protect what his father created while continuing to improve the way we serve customers. The growth from one garage to a full team reflects decades of steady work, but the heart of the company remains the same. We stay focused on the traditions that built trust with our community in the first place.
At the core of our work is a simple idea we return to every day.
“Everything that we do is to help our customers serve their health, their safety, their comfort, or their convenience.”
This focus shapes how we answer the phone, schedule appointments, and handle every visit to a customer’s home. Whether we are addressing a concern or helping with an upgrade, we look at how our work supports the way people live in their homes. We pay attention to the details that affect comfort and safety, from the quality of the installation to how we move through each room. By keeping these priorities in view, we align our decisions with what matters most to the families we serve.
Training and process play a large role in making sure our work reflects these values. We spend time teaching our technicians the proper ways to complete each type of job, so they understand not just what to do, but why it matters. This structure helps us approach projects carefully and consistently, rather than rushing through tasks. As a result, our team can walk into a home with a clear plan and the confidence that the work will be done correctly.
We also believe that clear, simple communication is part of good electrical service. When we explain what we find in a home, we avoid technical language that can cause confusion. Instead, we break down issues in terms that make sense, so customers can make informed choices about their homes. This approach turns what could be a stressful situation into a more straightforward conversation about options. Our goal is to help people feel informed and comfortable with each decision.
That same respect extends to how we view our own team and the community around us.
“We want to make sure that we're doing right by our people, our team and our community.”
We recognize that taking care of our employees helps them take better care of our customers. By staying mindful of the needs of both groups, we maintain the culture that Mel started and Rob continues to nurture. This balance keeps us grounded, even as we adopt new tools and technologies to serve modern homes. We do not lose sight of the relationships that have supported Mel Carr Electric for so many years.
Through all of this, we remain guided by the vision that began in that small Colonie garage.
“It was important to me that we respect his vision, that we honor what he laid down for us and we expand upon it.”
Every time our yellow trucks arrive at a home, they carry that history with them. We see each visit as another opportunity to reflect the care, integrity, and attention to detail that defined Mel’s work from the very beginning. For homeowners who value long-standing service and honest communication, this story helps explain what they can expect when they invite us into their homes. Watching the video above offers a closer look at how that legacy lives on in our work today.
